Short links and bio pages for Instagram, without guessing
Instagram strips referrers, caps the bio at 150 characters and gives you one link field. What that means for tracking, and the exact setup we use for Stories and Reels.

Instagram is the platform that taught a generation of marketers that "direct traffic" is a lie. Your Reel does
30,000 views, the bio link gets clicked, and Google Analytics reports the session as direct with no source at all.
Nothing is broken. The in-app browser simply did not send a referrer, and the one it sometimes sends says
l.instagram.com, which is Instagram's own click wrapper rather than a page on Instagram.
You cannot fix that from the analytics side. You fix it before the click, in the link.
The three link surfaces, and why they need separate links
Instagram gives creators three places a link can live, and the useful move is to treat them as three different campaigns rather than one destination.
The bio field. One URL, in a bio capped at 150 characters as of September 2026. Every profile visit sees it. Traffic here is warm and slow.
Story link stickers. Available to everyone since 2021, and they disappear in 24 hours unless you save the Story to a Highlight. Traffic here is fast and spiky.
Whatever is in the caption that people cannot click. Captions do not linkify. If you put a URL there, somebody has to read it and type it, which is the only place on Instagram where a ten-character link beats an eleven-character one for a reason you can measure.
Give each of them its own short link. Same destination, different codes. Now the comparison exists.
A worked example
A skincare brand ran one launch across all three surfaces in a week.
Bio: gc.mw/@brand, the bio page, five blocks, launch at the top. Story sticker: gc.mw/st9k, with UTM tags stored
on the link, utm_source=instagram, utm_medium=story, utm_campaign=serum-launch, so nothing was typed into
the URL and nothing was mistyped. Caption: gc.mw/serum, an alias short enough that people actually typed it.
The Story link took the most clicks in the first four hours and almost nothing after. The bio page kept producing for eleven days. The caption link took under 2% of the total, which sounds like failure until you notice those were the only visitors who had read 200 words before arriving, and they converted at four times the rate.
Three links, three answers. One link would have given a total and no answers.
What the analytics show that Instagram's do not
Instagram Insights tells you about Instagram. It stops at the click.
The short link picks it up from there: clicks and unique visitors by day, country, city-level region, device family,
browser, and referrer classified into search, social, email and ads. l.instagram.com and instagram.com are
folded into one Instagram row by a rule list, which is a small thing that stops a week of traffic looking like two
unrelated sources.
Bots are scored and separated rather than deleted. Link preview crawlers hit a link the moment it is posted, that first burst before any human sees the Story is Facebook's own fetcher, and it is filtered out of the human number while staying visible in the raw one.
Retention is 30 days on Free, 365 on Pro, 1,095 on Business. If you plan to compare this September against next September, that is the field to look at before you pick a plan.

Link-in-Bio Preview
Open the full toolMock the page up, decide what goes at the top, then claim the name. Any name of five characters or more is free, and names are not re-issued, so the cost of claiming yours today is nothing and the cost of finding it gone next year is real.
Two habits worth stealing. Change the Story link every campaign rather than reusing one, a code costs nothing and a merged history costs you the answer. And check the bio page on a 320-pixel screen before you publish; that is still where a meaningful share of Instagram traffic lands, and it is where a three-line button label turns into a mess.
The link-in-bio product page has the block types and themes, and the UTM builder will construct the tagged URL if you would rather paste one than fill in fields.
Questions people ask
Why does Instagram traffic show up as direct in Google Analytics?
The in-app browser often sends no referrer, and the referrer that does arrive is l.instagram.com rather than instagram.com. A short link with UTM parameters attached fixes it: the tags travel through the redirect and land in your analytics regardless of what the app sends.
Should I use a bio page or one link?
One link if there is genuinely one thing to do this month. A bio page the moment there are two, because the alternative is editing the bio field every time a campaign changes and losing the comparison between them.
Do link stickers in Stories work with short links?
Yes, and they are where the split is most useful. Put a different short link in the sticker from the one in your bio and you can see which drives more, instead of adding both numbers together and learning nothing.
Does a short link look spammy on Instagram?
A random code does. gc.mw/@yourname or gc.mw/shop reads as intentional. The screenshot test settles it: if someone photographs your profile and has to type what they see, a ten-character link works and a forty-character one does not.
