TikTok links: one bio field, no clickable captions, real tracking

TikTok caps the bio at 80 characters and only Business accounts get a website link. How to make one field carry a catalogue, and how to attribute the traffic it sends.

TikTok gives you the least link surface of any major platform and the most traffic per follower. That combination makes the one clickable field on your profile the most valuable eighty characters in your marketing, and it makes the spoken code in your video the second most valuable.

The constraint, stated exactly

As of September 2026 a TikTok bio holds 80 characters, and the profile website link is available to Business accounts. Captions do not linkify. Comments containing links get suppressed often enough that treating them as a channel is a waste of a comment.

So there is one clickable thing, and everything you sell has to get behind it.

What to put in the one field

A bio page, not a destination. gc.mw/@handle costs nothing for any name of five characters or more and holds up to fifty blocks, though the pages that work carry four or five.

The reason is not laziness. A profile link pointed at this week's product page is a link you edit weekly, and each edit resets the comparison, you lose the ability to say that October's traffic was double September's, because the link that carried September is gone. Point the field at a page you control, change the page, keep one click history that runs across every campaign.

The 80 characters then take care of themselves. gc.mw/@handle is thirteen, leaving sixty-seven for the sentence that actually persuades someone to tap it.

The typed code, which is TikTok-specific

Because captions are dead, the per-video link is whatever a viewer can type from memory after watching. Say it, put it on screen for two seconds, keep it four characters.

gc.mw/tea works. gc.mw/x7Kq9mP does not, not because it is ugly, but because a person watching at 1.5x speed on a phone cannot hold seven random characters long enough to open a browser. Our alphabet drops 0, O, I and l for exactly this failure mode, and on a paid plan a custom alias lets you choose a word instead of a code.

A worked example

A cookware seller ran the same product across four videos in a fortnight.

Bio: gc.mw/@panhome, three blocks, the pan at the top. Each video also carried a spoken alias, gc.mw/wok, gc.mw/pan, gc.mw/lid, gc.mw/oil, all pointing at the same product page, each with its own UTM content tag stored on the link.

The bio page took roughly seven times the traffic of the four typed codes combined. That was expected. What was not expected: the typed codes converted at more than double the rate, because typing a URL from memory is an act of intent that tapping a profile link is not.

They did not stop using the bio page. They started reading the two numbers separately, and moved budget toward the videos where people typed.

What you can see afterwards

Clicks and unique visitors by day, country, device family, browser and referrer. TikTok's own domains are folded into a single TikTok row by a rule list, so the in-app browser and the desktop web do not appear as two unrelated sources.

Scans are counted apart from clicks, which matters more than it sounds for TikTok sellers who also ship a card in the box. The QR on the card and the link in the bio can point at the same page and still be measured separately, because the QR encodes the link with a ?qr marker.

Bots are scored and separated. Every link posted anywhere collects a burst of preview-crawler hits within seconds; that burst is filtered out of the human count and left visible in the raw one.

Type a handle, a line of bio and your links, and look at it on the phone mock-up. Nothing is saved and no account is needed. If it reads well at 320 pixels it will read well in the app.

Then claim the name, free from five characters, and not re-issued once taken, and switch the profile to Business so the website field appears. The link-in-bio product page covers themes and block types, and the branded links page covers the aliases you will want for the spoken codes.

Questions people ask

Why can I not add a link to my TikTok bio?

Website links in the profile are a Business account feature as of September 2026. Switching a personal account to Business is free and takes about a minute in settings; the trade is that some sounds in the commercial library become unavailable to you.

Does TikTok pass a referrer?

Rarely anything useful. The in-app browser is aggressive about stripping it, so analytics tend to log the session as direct. Attach UTM parameters to the short link and the tags arrive through the redirect no matter what the app sends.

Can I put a different link on each video?

Not in the video itself, captions are not clickable. What works is a bio page whose top block changes with the campaign, plus a spoken or on-screen short code people can type. The typed code is the only per-video link TikTok gives you, which is exactly why it needs to be four characters.

Is it worth switching the bio link every week?

No. Point the bio at a page you control and change what is on the page instead. Editing the profile field re-triggers review on some accounts and, more importantly, throws away the click history that made the last campaign comparable to this one.

One platform, two surfaces

A short link and a business card are the same object here.

Point a link at a card and you have a handshake you can print, say out loud or tap across. Both halves report into one dashboard on one plan.

You hand this over

GC.MW/riya

Ten characters. Short enough to say on a call, print on a badge or fit inside an SMS.

It opens this

CARDS.GC.MW/riya

Your digital business card, on its own host, with a contact file the phone can save.

  • One link, one card

A short link can resolve to your card, so the thing you hand over is 10 characters long.

  • One dashboard

Links, cards, domains and codes are managed from the same screen under the same login.

  • One analytics view

Clicks on a link and views on a card read from the same rollups, so a campaign is one number.

  • One plan, one key

A plan covers both halves and one API key creates either. No second bill and no second vendor.
